Mr Leigh Cooper
.
My first experience of teaching children was as a swimming teacher. It is where I found my true passion for working with children to help them become the best they can be in any setting. I soon took up a role as a one to one teaching assistant in my local primary school. It was here I got a true understanding of what it takes to work in a school. During my time as a teaching assistant I became a staff governor and this gave me a deeper insight to the more detailed work that goes on aside the everyday workings of a school. During this time, I began a Degree in Education through the Open University.
After nine years of being a teaching assistant I moved to a greater London school and qualified as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). This role gave me the opportunity to take on more responsibility, which is something I really enjoyed.
I completed my degree and joined a school in London to start a Schools Direct trainee teacher post, which was run by the Harris Federation. In 2016 I achieved a permanent teaching role as a newly qualified teacher with the same organisation in a newly formed primary school, which was grown from the bottom up. I followed the year group from Year two to Year six, mapping out the new curriculum each year. My professional progression included Art and DT lead, Head of Year, Maths lead, designated safe guard lead and Acting Assistant principle.
I made the decision to leave and move to a school closer to home to spend more time with my young family. I now start my journey at Magna Carta. I am extremely proud to be the first year six teacher and am excited to be a part of BMAT family.
